Carole Johnson MCSP SRP Cert Ed Chartered Physiotherapist

Carole Johnson is a Chartered Registered Physiotherapist who has gained a post 16 Certificate in Education and completed the Advanced Level in Neuromuscular Approach to Moving and Handling.

She was the Chairman of the National Back Exchange, a multi disciplinary association for Back Care Advisers from 1999 - 2004. Carole is a member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses, listed in the Law Society Expert Witness Register, a member of Neuromuscular Association, National Back Exchange Paediatric Interest Group, East Anglian Back Exchange and a member of the Health Professions Council Practice Committee Panels (Investigating, Health and Conduct & Competence).

Carole served on the Editorial Committee for Essential Back Up (revised) in 2002 (an employer's guide for setting up and maintaining an effective Back Care Advisory Service) and contributed to the NBE Manual Handling Standard. As part of her role on the National Back Exchange Executive Committee was involved in the ratification of the Trainer and Training Standards and was on the Editorial Committee for the 5th Edition of the Guide to the Handling of Patients to be published by the Royal College of Nursing and BackCare. She was also the author on the chapter on ‘Risk Assessment’ and ran the practical assessment sessions for the evidence collection. Carole was also one of the chapter authors for the Guidance on Manual Handling for Chartered Physiotherapists (2008).

She has worked in a number of care settings, as Superintendent Physiotherapist on a Care of the Elderly Unit incorporating acute, rehabilitation and long term care wards, medical and orthopaedic wards and units before starting as a part time Back Care Adviser in 1989. Carole is currently a Freelance Manual Handling Consultant and has been commissioned to provide training, audit, legal reports, analysis and solutions for simple and complex situations with children, young people and adults with disabilities within the community and has done so for the last 17 years. She has also been involved in a number of complex manual handling legal cases.

Carole speaks nationally and internationally at seminars arranged by such organizations as the Department of Health, National Audit Office, the Disabled Living Foundation, National Back Exchange and teaches on the Post Graduate Diploma Course at Loughborough University and most recently at the Australian Association for Manual Handling of People Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
