Rivermead Leisure Complex, Reading

Programme
9.30am - 10.00am   Registration
10.00am - 10.15am   Chair’s opening remarks

10.15am - 11.00am   Speaker 1: "Handling with Care"
Carole Johnson MCSP SRP Cert Ed Chartered Physiotherapist.

Details: The importance of assessing the risk, setting up plans and integrating services cannot be underestimated. But at the same time it is important to remember that our physical interaction with the child in our care and during moving and handling in particular can have a profound effect on that child’s view of handling as they grow up. That view can affect future opportunities and options.

This session looks at ways in which our ‘handhold’ has affected children using particular case studies, surveys and a theoretical background in an interactive session.

The follow up practical session in the afternoon will give tips and strategies on making sure that we help children grow up knowing that good moving and handling is a positive and empowering experience for all concerned.

11.00am - 11.45am   Speaker 2: "Lifting children: when, how, why?"
Elizabeth Hallows MCSP LPC (Back Care Management) Chartered Physiotherapist.

Details: This presentation will look at the manual lifting of children, and consider when this may be done, how to do it and why. It will focus on the risk assessment approach but will also include much practical advice.

11.45am - 12.00pm Coffee

12.00pm - 12.45pm   Speaker 3: "Treatment is a risky business-assessing and managing the risk"
Gillian Stern MCSP Grad Dip Phys Chartered neuro-paediatric physiotherapist/Senior Bobath Tutor.

Details: Apart from the Duty of Care to oneself, Risk Assessment is a legal requirement in all countries of the European Union.

This presentation aims to encourage therapists, therapy assistants and carers to
• recognise the importance of performing Risk Identification and Risk Management
• consider using the specially developed documentation
• think creatively in order to modify what you do or how you do it.

It will discuss how the British Association of Bobath Trained Therapists (BABTT) were proactive in setting up a working party

o to produce an easy-to-read guidance booklet (available after presentation)
o to produce easy-to-complete Risk Assessment/Management forms (in booklet)
o to educate therapists via interactive workshops

The presentation will explore the relationship between the Bobath concept and Risk Assessment. It will also highlight the role we all have as Bobath therapists and tutors, and will show how Bobath (or any) therapy can be applied effectively, maintaining the ideals of the Bobath Concept without compromising safety to ourselves and to the client.

It will seek to demonstrate how to identify, minimise and manage risk through illustrated example.

Finally this presentation will show how to document Risk Management strategies, so that we continue to treat to help our patients to achieve their potential as SAFELY as possible, balancing the risks against the benefits.
